10 Verses on Gratitude

This wasn’t a part of the plan.

A year ago, I was running on empty and embarking on a new adventure, moving to a new city and starting a new job. My plan was to take it easy and get my footing. I wanted a safe haven to be able to rest, heal, and get stronger. I was really excited about what was up ahead. Chronic pneumonia? Not what I expected.

It wasn’t my first tango with a lung infection, but this time was different. The antibiotics weren’t working and my body was beyond exhausted. There were many days where gratitude was a distant idea because I didn’t feel grateful. It wasn’t in the plan to get this sick.

Through the process I am learning that no matter what my circumstances are, I can choose to be grateful for who God is and all that He has done in my life. It brings hope. It takes my eyes off of myself and puts them on God. It fights against the discouragement and defeat I feel in the midst of the storm. Choosing gratitude is not always easy, but it is always possible and it changes my perspective every single time.

Here are 10 verses about being thankful that have helped me set my focus and I hope they do the same for you this Thanksgiving season.

“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

“But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:57

“And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.” Colossians 3:17

“Then I will praise God’s name with singing, and I will honor Him with thanksgiving.” Psalm 69:30

“Enter His gates with thanksgiving; go into His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name.” Psalm 100:4

“Let us come to Him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him. For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods.” Psalm 95:2-3

“Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever.” 1 Chronicles 16:34

“And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:20

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

“In that wonderful day you will sing: ‘Thank the LORD! Praise His name! Tell the nations what He has done. Let them know how mighty He is! Sing to the LORD, for He has done wonderful things. Make known His praise around the world.’” Isaiah 12:4-5
