Mommy Is Strong

Before I was a mom, I was what some people call a 'gym rat.' I was a part-time fitness instructor teaching strength training and Spinning. I did 100 mile bike rides and ran in organized races on the weekends. I LOVED to sweat and the adrenaline of athletic activity.

Now that I have 3 kids, I'm still that person! But society tells me that I'm supposed to change. Society tells me that moms are to give all of their time, energy, and effort to their families. Mommy guilt is alive and well... and it's a killer to your heart and soul if you let it get to you. 

It took a while, but I have finally realized that taking care of my health (both physically and mentally) IS what's best for my family. I am a better mom after I've had a good workout. My heart will last longer so I can be better for my kids when they're 8, 18, 28, and beyond. Plus, it shows them commitment, perserverance, healthy habits, and to take care of the body that God so graciously gave us to navigate this world.

A coworker shared this video with me and I was in tears within 15 seconds. It was aptly timed because when I left the house at 5 AM this morning to head down to Under Armour to teach spin class, my 3 year old had just popped into our room for his last couple hours of sleep. He said, 'Mommy...why do you have to go?' Of course, it broke my heart. I told him that people were waiting for me at the gym and I had to go teach them how to ride bikes and be healthy. He said, "Okay, Mommy. Have a good day. I love you." I kissed him, and he went back to sleep.

After watching this video, I feel confident that my decisions are not only not detrimental to his growth and our relationship, but actually instrumental in showing him that mommy is a rock star...and can still love him very much.
