Derek Redmond knew what it meant to work hard and train hard. At 19 years old, he shattered the British 400m record. He already had five surgeries on his achilles tendon so he knew what it meant to work hard for what you wanted. He had qualified for the semi-finals as the fastest in his heat. But something went terribly wrong during the semi-final race. Halfway in, Derek's right hamstring snapped. But the moment that had the world talking was when he stood up, in tremendous pain, to finish the race, and his father running past security to help his son.
