8 Verses About Giving

When we think about "giving," usually we think about it in the context of money. But in the Bible, giving was much more than the giving of your wealth. It was giving a helping hand, a listening ear, being generous with your time and attention, and your finances, too. As you read these verses, challenge yourself to see if you are as generous as you think you are, and ask God to show you people and ways that you can give to others.

"All must give as they are able, according to the blessings given to them by the Lord your God." - Deuteronomy 16:17, NLT

"Some people are always greedy for more, but the godly love to give!" - Proverbs 21:26, NLT

"The people rejoiced over the offerings, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord, and King David was filled with joy." - 1 Chronicles 29:9, NLT

"Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full - pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back." - Luke 6:38, NLT

"Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, 'Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well'—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?" - James 2:15-16, NLT

"If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion - how can God’s love be in that person? Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions." - 1 John 3:17-18, NLT

"Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don’t have. Of course, I don’t mean your giving should make life easy for others and hard for yourselves. I only mean that there should be some equality." - 2 Corinthians 8:13-14, NLT

"John [the Baptist] replied, 'If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.'” - Luke 3:11, NLT
