Mesmerizing Lightning Bugs

It was a warm summer night. I packed in a car with a group of friends in search of stars. We ended up in a field in the middle of the woods. I was surprised by the flickering lights moving all around us. There were thousands of lightning bugs. It felt as if we were in a movie and we had just found this secret place of wonders, like Aladdin walking into the hidden cave full of treasures.

It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

Lightning bugs have this ability to take my breath away and make me feel giddy. They are mysterious because you don’t ever really know where they are. They remind me of the gospel.

In the midst of my darkness, Jesus stepped into it and shined His light. He brought me out of the pit that I was in and gave me new life!

“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” John 8:12 (NIV)

Scripture does tell us who Jesus is and what He did, but there is still an air of mystery to it… How is it possible that the God who created the universe walked on the earth as a human? Why would He willingly choose to die for something He wasn’t even guilty of? What does all of this mean for life today?

While I won’t fully understand every facet of the gospel until I get to heaven, I know this: Jesus died on the cross because of love. Death was worth it because it meant that I could be rescued.

The more that this truth sinks in, I can’t help but marvel at this God who is so in love with His creation. Just like I get giddy catching a glimpse of lightning bugs, He gets giddy about me.

When you see those beautiful flickers of light this summer, may you be reminded that God loves you and He gets giddy over you too!
