The Easter Experience

One of the things I have noticed in my walk with Jesus is that the longer I have known Him, the easier it is for the things about Him to become one-dimensional. When I first met Jesus, celebrating His birth and His death and resurrection was a really big deal for me because these realities were sinking in.

As time went by, the significance of who Jesus was and what He did didn’t change. But, I noticed that I started going through the motions of celebrating what Jesus did and was disconnected from its impact. I found myself feeling sad as Easter would come and go each year. I wanted to be moved by it again.

Last year was more of a “going through the motions” Easter and I told God that I didn’t want to keep doing this. In preparation for Easter this year, I started brainstorming on ways to be fully present and this is what emerged:

Operation Experience Easter 2019

  • Read through the Easter story at least once this week. Luke 22-24
  • Participate in the Walk with Jesus text experience that follows the events surrounding Easter in “real time.”

  • Evaluate → Confess → Repent – Evaluate my heart before God (Psalm 51). What sin in my life do I need to confess and turn away from? Take time to talk with Him about it and receive His forgiveness.
  • Gratitude – Find one way to say thank you to Jesus for what He has accomplished! He chose to step in and suffer on my behalf because I couldn’t save myself – that’s a BIG deal. Some ideas: say a prayer, write a note, draw a picture, or tell a friend about Him.
  • Worship – Spend time worshiping Jesus and focusing my mind on Him. This is a playlist to listen to throughout the week: A Celebration of Christ’s Sacrifice.
  • Celebrate – Attend an Easter service at church to celebrate that Jesus is risen and He is alive!

Creating an “action plan” to experience Easter might seem silly, but I know that if I don’t, the motions of life will sweep me up yet again. Unfortunately, they will have to try again next year because this year I’m ready!

What are things that you can do this week be present with the meaning of Easter and celebrating Jesus?
