The Lesson I Learned From My Son About Christmas

I had an interesting moment with my 10 year old son Brady. We were talking about Christmas and the things he wanted. I asked him, “Buddy, what does Christmas really mean?”

He said, “Well, uh, you know, it’s about God and stuff.”

I gave him a “dad look" and asked again, “Yeah, but what’s the meaning of Christmas?”

He became serious and said, “Well, Dad, it’s like this: we are the candle and Jesus is the match.”

I was speechless. That’s a perfect way to describe Christmas.

There are some candles that are really expensive. There are some candles that are inexpensive. Candles come in all shapes and sizes and colors. But no matter the candle, what happens to the light? When lit, it still burns brightly. No matter the shape, no matter the size, no matter the color, it still burns.

That’s the beauty of Jesus. He never changes and His light always remains the same - no matter our size, shape, or color. We burn brightly because of Him.

"The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” - John 1:4-5
