Trusting God When Circumstances Are Difficult

How do we trust God when our circumstance feels unbearable?

We have to keep dropping our anchor into the promises of God, because the waves will hit us and the winds will toss us.

For my family and me, eight years ago when our journey of grief and loss began (our little girl went to be with Jesus), there were songs - it's not overstating it to say - that not only kept my heart and my faith alive, but they really kept me alive.

One of those in particular was the song Matt Redman, my friend, wrote years ago called, "Blessed Be Your Name." It's from the book of Job.

And blessed be Your name
When I'm found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed be Your name

Every blessing You pour out
I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say
Blessed be Your name

You can listen to the song here

That song was literally like a lifeline and like oxygen.

For me, to be able in the darkest moments, to say, "God You give, You take away, and I'm going to worship You. I'm going to bless Your name, and I'm going to trust You," was when I really began to connect in a deeper way than ever with worship songs. I connected with how many times the Psalmist would say, "God, how long? Are you going to forget me forever? I feel forgotten, I feel alone, I feel desperate, but I'm going to declare that You are faithful, You are good, and Your love endures forever." By doing that, by worshiping, the Psalmist believed. Even Abraham, in the New Testament it says he grew in his faith as he gave glory to God.

"Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises. And because of Abraham’s faith, God counted him as righteous." - Romans 4:20-22

As Abraham worshiped, he grew in the Lord. That's what I'm trying to do, worship when it's hard because that's when my faith and I grow in God.
