Do you have to deal with someone who is difficult? Are you struggling to maintain your Christian outlook when all you want to do is set it to the side and ask for forgiveness later? Good news: you’re not alone. We’ve all been there. When you commit to following Jesus, it can be exceptionally hard to respond as a Jesus follower. Take a few moments to absorb these words from Scripture that can help you maintain your cool when faced with a difficult person or challenging situation.

“Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling.” – Proverbs 20:3

“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!” – Jesus (Matthew 4:43-45)

“Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.” – Colossians 3:13-14

“A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.” – Proverbs 15:1

“A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.” – Proverbs 12:16

“Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing.” – 1 Peter 3:9

“But if you are always biting and devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another. So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.” – Galatians 5:15-16

“Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love makes up for all offenses.” – Proverbs 10:12

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” – James 1:2-4

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” – Galatians 5:22-23

“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.” – Galatians 5:24-26

“If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them! And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much! And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other sinners for a full return. Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.” – Jesus (Luke 6:32-36)
