In a press conference at 11 a.m, Governor Larry Hogan and Maryland State Superintendent, Dr. Karen Salmon announced that public schools in Maryland will remain closed through April 24th, 2020.

The initial announcement regarding schools was that they would be closed from March 16 and reopen March 27. However, a longer closure was deemed necessary due to the increase in coronavirus cases in Maryland, specifically going from nine cases to 423 in just 15 days.

Dr. Salmon also informed the public that they have been working diligently to provide child care for the essential personnel who are unable to watch their children. Spaces throughout the state such as YMCAs, public libraries, and other facilities are among those that will offer care for over 1200 school-aged children of essential personnel.

Other updates, as well as specifics regarding Dr. Salmon and Governor Hogan’s announcements, can be found below in the full press conference video.
