Look for the good.

These words have been floating around recently. Initially, they seem cliche, and even impossible, due to the chaos the world is experiencing. Businesses are closed, some people have lost their jobs, kids aren’t going to school, and certain groups can’t even make a trip to the grocery store without fear of infection.

So, how can there be any good in a situation like this? Well, Deuteronomy 31:8 reminds us that “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Here’s the thing, God has said He will never leave us and He has also promised to provide for our every need, no exceptions (Philippians 4:19).

Looking for good can come in many forms, and one of them is redirecting our thoughts to God’s promises when our minds wander to worry. This isn’t something we do once and forget about, but it’s a constant battle. When we feel tempted to fall back into that fear, we can think of a few things we are thankful for.

It’s not an easy process by any means, but maybe we can get the ball rolling now and train ourselves to look for more of the good. Here are just a few things to be thankful for in the midst of this mess:

  • More time with family/loved ones
  • Opportunity to spend some extra time with God
  • Chances to call and catch-up with those who might be lonely
  • Time to help or be helped

What are some other things you are thankful for during this time?
