In the most recent episode of the Your Day Brighter™ Podcast titled “Mrs. Almighty,” Tracey asks Mandisa what people can do to help stand united with our black brothers and sisters against racism. Read part of Mandisa’s powerful response below…

Tracey: Heartbroken yet again, I hate that the names that become familiar to us are in the headlines because of what’s happening. George Floyd most recently, Ahmaud Arbery. I mean, we could go on and on and on…I’d love to know from your perspective as an Aftrican American woman and such an ambassador for Christ – how do you help? Do you have any suggestions for us as followers of Christ and caucasians, nonblack people, who really care, who really want to stand united?

Mandisa: My first piece of advice for people who are not people of color is to do what Tracey just did: ask the people in your life how can I pray for you? What can I do? And you know what, I really believe that this is strong hold that has been present in our country since our country was formed. It’s not going to happen overnight, but I personally believe it will happen relationally. It’s gonna happen in living rooms and coffee shops with people who look different from one another on the outside, but who believe the same on the inside. It’s going to happen through difficult conversations. So, ask the people in your life who don’t look like you to sit down and let’s just have an honest conversation. And invite the Holy Spirit to be with you in the conversation. Because I’ll be honest, it’s probably not going to be easy. There are going to be some things that may be said that you don’t understand or maybe that you even disagree with, but there is a way that we, as followers of Jesus, can disagree with one another and still do it in love. It’s what we see time and time again in the Bible. And the one thing that Jesus prayed for us in John 17 before He went to the cross, is not that we would quote scripture, it’s not that we would come together in churches. He prayed that we would be one just as He and the Father are one. Unity is so important to His heart and we have to take that seriously. So I think the best way to be united is to gather in small groups, even one on one, with people who don’t look like you or maybe don’t even share the same beliefs and have the difficult conversations. That’s how I think that this stronghold will be broken in our country.
